Jeffrey’ s Top 3
août 12, 2011
Fantasia has come and gone, but many of the strange, wonderful offerings of previous years were MIA. Although there were a handful of great films, nothing this year reached the heights of 2009’s Castaway on the Moon or last year’s Scott Pilgrim. Maybe next time!
1. BLEAK NIGHT – This Korean film about high school relationships explores the darkness of group politics in a profound, stylish way. The acting stands out as particularly nuanced.
2. PETTY ROMANCE – Hollywood could use a lesson in the lighthearted goofiness of this airy romantic comedy. There is nothing pretentious or gritty to be found here, just pure pleasure.
3. ATTACK THE BLOCK – Stylish monsters and an especially relevant social conscience make this film a standout. A smart sense of humor doesn’t hurt either.
Honorable mention: DETENTION – This may not be an entirely coherent film, but the bits and pieces are treasures. I haven’t laughed this hard at the movies in ages.
